The National ID

Not to get to political (that was my rap star disclaimer) but the issue of the National ID has been brought to my attention. Why should it be required for the citizens of the United States to carry a national identification card? Will this card have some sort of technology in it that will contain my personal information, further decreasing my level of personal privacy. VeriChip, GPS, What? I mean its not like the government cant listen to my telephone conversations already? What do you think?
